WELLINGTON, FL (WFLX) - A 3-year-old girl fighting leukemia has died from swine flu after getting the virus while in the hospital in Orlando.
She was at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital. Jocelyn Davis got sick with H1N1 just days after learning doctors had finally found a bone marrow transplant match for her. She had been battling cancer since she was just 18 months old.
All hospitals isolate children with cancer and don't use re-circulated air in their rooms. Nurses and visitors sanitize coming in and out of the rooms; however, sometimes that's still not enough to keep infection from spreading.
Experts say there are still so many germs and contagious disease that are concentrated inside hospitals.
That's why the Kids Cancer Foundation is trying to get a donor to start a $6 million outpatient clinic for children. Palm Beach County has outpatient clinics for adults, but none for children.
If there were one, children could get treated for cancer without having to go to a hospital, which can put them at risk for potentially deadly infections.
