Bath time might be toxic time for babies

Posted by Rachel Leigh email

(WFLX) - A consumer group is warning parents of young children that what you put in their tub may be toxic.

A study of baby washes and lotions conducted by "Campaign for Safe Cosmetics" found dozens of top selling bath products are contaminated with the cancer-causing chemicals: formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

The group claims Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo has both chemicals, and that Baby Magic Soft Baby Scent lotion has the highest level of formaldehyde of the products tested.

While a single product might not be cause for concern, the group says babies may be exposed to several products at bath time several times a week, and those small exposures add up and may contribute to later-life disease.

The chemicals are not disclosed on product labels because they're contaminants, not ingredients, and exempt from labeling laws.
