Off-duty Sheriff's deputy involved in fatal shooting

By Chuck Weber email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-An off-duty Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy, who was out in South Beach, shot a man who police say was armed and was trying to rob the deputy. The man later died at a hospital.

Miami Beach Police identified the deputy as Justin Clayton. Detective Juan Sanchez said his department was having trouble locating the family of the man who was shot. For that reason, the man's name has yet to be released.

Detective Sanchez said the man approached Deputy Clayton with a knife, in a robbery attempt. Clayton, who was not in uniform, fired at the man and hit him. Witnesses said it appeared the man was shot in the stomach. The man wound up on the platform of a lifeguard stand near Ocean Drive and 8th Street, the heart of the South Beach entertainment district.

How he ended up there, and what led up to the shooting, is now being investigated by both Miami Beach Police and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Teri Barbera, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman, says Clayton is in his mid-20's, and became part of the department only this past fall during the merger with Lake Worth Police. Barbera says Deputy Clayton is on paid administrative leave, which is customary after officer shootings.
