Stolen Church Van Found

Members of a church in West Palm Beach feel their prayers have been answered.

A passenger van stolen from the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ has been recovered.

The van was taken sometime overnight from the church parking lot in West Palm Beach on Cheerful Street, and was found this afternoon in Riviera Beach, where it was abandoned with a shattered window and a broken steering column.  The van still runs.

The church runs a soup kitchen and a food pantry and uses the van to pick up donated food and other goods for the needy.

"We definitely are experiencing a very, very high crime rate right now because of the economic situation. It definitely does not justify the meaningless crime that was committed on us," said Shandra Stringer, a church spokeswoman.

She's clearly relieved.  "I'm very happy.  At least we know we can resume business as usual," Stringer said.

The church van is now at an automotive shop in Riviera Beach, awaiting repairs.  A mechanic there told us he estimates fixing the damage will cost $500-700.   Whether police will be able to find the culprit is unclear.  A West Palm Beach police spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
