VERO BEACH, FL (WFLX) - New shoes, they feel good, but they can cost a lot. That's why some students on the Treasure Coast are getting a free pair all in the name of education.

They were prepped, measured and ready to go: Thompson Magnet kids all looking for sneakers up and down the aisles of Payless.

Kaylan, looking high and low, exclaimed, "I have never had shoes like these before, and they are really cool!"

The goal of this. "It's about keeping kids on a path of learning and building self-esteem," said a spokesperson with the Education Foundation of Indian River County.

With this economy, many of these kids can't afford new kicks, so the Education Foundation of Indian River County picks up the tab. "We are seeing almost double. In some schools, as high as 65 percent."

The demand for shoes is up, but donations are down 40 percent. Still, this group tries to give soles for souls.

But, cash is needed to keep kids learning and growing. If you'd like to help donate to the cause, you can visit the Sneaker Exchange Program's Web site.
