Firefighters Swarm Brush Fire

It was a small brush fire, but firefighters certainly responded in a big way.

The fire broke out around 2:30 this afternoon near Military Trail and Palm Avenue in suburban West Palm Beach.

Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue says the fire was only two or  three  acres in size, but they brought in eight trucks to fight it.   With conditions so windy, they feared it could get out of hand and threaten houses nearby.

The flames even spread up into the trees, ten or twenty feet from the ground.

"Smelled a whole bunch of smoke, went out and investigated and looked across the street and there was a horrible amount of smoke and then I heard pine trees and wood snap-cracklin' and poppin' and uh, there was one heck of a fire goin' on!" said Jim St. John, a homeowner who lives on Palm Avenue.  He was in his garage working on an antique car when he noticed the smoke.

The fire did blacken and scorch  a wooden fence, but no homes were damaged and no one had to be evacuated.
