One Dead, One Wounded in Shooting

Sheriff's detectives are looking for shooter or shooters who killed one man and wounded another in a shooting outside a nightclub in suburban West Palm Beach.

A neighbor says he heard six or seven shots about 6:45 this morning.

When he looked out, he saw deputies swarming the Red Barn.  Managers say it's an auto- detailing business that also hosts private parties. "This is the first time a problem like that ever happened here. I mean we never even had a fight here before," said Cornelius Terry,  one of the managers at the Red Barn.

Terry says the Red Barn had hosted a private party Sunday night and had closed an hour or two before the drive-by shooting. Some patrons were still standing around outside when a car drove by, and someone whipped out a handgun and started shooting. Detectives say one man was shot in the head, another in the leg.

"Well I feel terrible. I feel terrible for the family," said Terry.

The managers gave us a look inside.  There's a stage with a pole for dancers, a bar, and what they describe as a special VIP area with sofas.

"It looks like you're running a strip club. You got a stage with a pole," I pointed out.  "Well basically it's made for entertainers. It's made for bachelor parties, birthday parties," said Dorian Chingwa, another Red Manager.   "We don't have nude dancin' over here. We have dancers that have on bikinis, bathin' suits," said Terry.

Posters and postcards found in the street say the Red Barn was hosting a Black Entertainment Television Spring Bling Party this weekend. But the managers told me the facility was not rented out by BET, and the party was not an official Spring Bling-sponsored event. They hope the $1500 dollar reward will be the key to solving the murder.

"I'm hoping somebody could step up and you know, turn this guy in, because I know a lot of people seen him, there was a lot of people out here from what I'm hearing," said Terry.

Meanwhile, Terry Verner, the head of Palm Beach County Code Enforcement told me the Red Barn has an occupational license for indoor entertainment, consisting of pool tables only.  And Verner says today they cited the place for operating a lounge within 250 feet of a residential area.

He said the only way the Red Barn can operate legally here is to have just pool tables, soft drinks, and they must close by 11pm.

They have ten days to comply, or face fines of up to $250 a day.
