Lifeguards revive 5-year old

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX)-A day of fun at a West Boca water park nearly turned tragic when a 5-year old girl slipped underwater. But quick-acting lifeguards saved the girl.

A spring break crowd of parents and kids were cooling off Thursday at Coconut Cove Waterpark in South County Regional Park. But in the park's lap pool, the 5-year old girl was getting into trouble.

"It appeared she decided to stop swimming and hold her breath," said water park facilities manager Andrea Walsh. "The lifeguard saw what was happening and reacted."

The lifeguard jumped into the pool. When she reached the girl, the 5-year old from Delray Beach was not breathing, said Walsh. The girl did have a pulse.

The park's other lifeguards also jumped into action. "The lifeguards administered rescue breathing for about 30 seconds," explained Walsh. "And then the girl was fine."

"All of a sudden you just heard her start coughing and crying," recalled Brande Keenan, who was at the park with her children and another family. Keenan and other witnesses say the girl even waved as medics carried her out.

Keenan said initially she didn't know what was happening or whether her own kids were in trouble. "All we saw was everybody was running and screaming, the air horns," said Keenan. "It was very scary. It was very sad. But it had a happy ending."

"They worked very expeditiously," said another bystander, Jonathan Collins. "I want to give them a lot of credit. They did a real good job."

Medics took the girl to the hospital as a precaution. A Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue spokesman said the girl should be okay.
