Former socialite pleads guilty

By Chuck Weber email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-A former Palm Beach socialite pleaded guilty to tax, bankruptcy and mortgage fraud on Friday. At the federal courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach, Lin Gosman said she was guilty to three counts-- many fewer than the 17 she originally faced. Still it was not a happy day for Gosman.

Fighting tears as she left the building, Gosman only said, "I'm heartbroken."

Gosman is the wife of former health care magnate Abe Gosman, although the couple has been separated three years. Federal prosecutors say during Mr.Gosman's bankruptcy, Mrs. Gosman hid money and stashed jewelry and other valuables in a public storage unit.

In court as the judge asked Gosman about changing her plea, there were a few moments of what appeared to be tense discussions between Gosman, her lawyer, and prosecutors. But in the end, fighting tears, Gosman told Judge Kenneth Ryskamp she was guilty.

"It was perhaps the most abusive bankruptcy proceedings that I've ever read," commented Gosman's lawyer Donald Bierman, after the hearing. "This culmination is just unfortunate and very sad."

Gosman is paying nearly $350,000 in restitution to the IRS. At her sentencing in July, Gosman faces a maximum sentence of 36 years in prison. Her lawyer said sentencing guidelines for her situation suggest between three and four years.
