Homeowners Express Fears About Chinese Drywall

Two Florida lawmakers got an earful from homeowners worried about Chinese drywall.

U.S.  Senator Bill Nelson and Congressman Robert Wexler held a town hall meeting in West Palm Beach.

An estimated 30,000 homes in Florida contain imported Chinese drywall.  Experts say it emits a sulfur gas that smells like rotten eggs and corrodes copper wiring and air-conditioner coils and metal objects such as shower heads and silver jewelry.   Some homeowners say they and their children have suffered from nosebleeds, sinus trouble and respiratory problems.

"For me and my family we have to move out because I will not risk my family's health in this home," said John Willis, a homeowner from Parkland, Florida  in Broward County.

"We need help because we're all trapped in the same toxic situation," said Brian Eisenberg, a homeowner who lives near Boynton Beach.

Senator Nelson today sent a letter to President Obama, urging him to fire the head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, saying the agency has the power to ban future imports of Chinese drywall or issue a recall, but has failed to do so.
