PALM SPRINGS, FL (WFLX) -- Two dogs are presumed dead after a Palm Springs home caught fire early Thursday morning.

Fire officials were called out to a duplex behind the house at 3131 Gulfstream Road in Palm Springs around 7:00 am. Authorities say they saw thick smoke and flames pouring from the rear of the duplex.

No one was home at the time, but officials say two dogs were. One has been accounted for and the other has not, but officials believe both dogs died in the blaze.

"When we pulled up we had heavy smoke coming out," said District Chief John DeMarco of the Palm Springs Fire Department. "We had flames coming out from the rear of the structure, from all sides of it. The engine crews were able to make a good knock down of it, although we weren't able to make entry to save the pets."

The state Fire Marshal's office will look into the cause of the fire, but it is considered suspicious until proven otherwise, DeMarco said.
