Rip current blamed in Lake Worth drowning

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday for a man who drowned near Lake Worth beach. He has been identified as Leopold Lancelot Thomas, 20, from Boynton Beach.

Authorities say it happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday night, about 200 yards from shore.

Several people went in the water to try and rescue the struggling swimmer, including a 15-year-old boy. Those good samaritans have been identified as Donald Smith, 15, and Chris Kahler, 37.

"I pretty much grabbed him and [dragged] him up," said David Fanuelsen, who jumped in the water to try and help in the rescue efforts. "It was just instant tears. There was just nothing that could be done."

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office eventually used a helicopter to locate the man and fire-rescue authorities helped take him ashore.
