Chinese acrobats tumble into Lyric Theatre

STUART, FL (WFLX) - They toss plates, jars, themselves, and leave crowds breathless with their ability to balance on unstable platforms. "It's scary because you see them do these acrobatic things 20 feet in the air," described Lyric Theatre executive director John Loesser. "And it's amazing, and you really worry. It pounds my heart."

For more than 50 years, the National Acrobats of China have mesmerized audiences with their dazzling displays of derring-do.

There's nothing special about their props - a bowl here, chair there - but it's what they do with them that make theatre directors, like Loesser, especially proud to host. "It's part of the international programming I like to do here. I bring in a lot of international groups whether they're dance companies or simply family entertainment like this. It's really important culturally and great fun for everyone."

As the acrobats tumble out, Dixie's Tupperware Party moves in. "It's a lot of fun, and you buy Tupperware during the show."

Just make sure to bring those plastic souvenirs back to the Lyric June 19 for the Sauce Boss. "He comes on stage, plays great blues music while he's making gumbo which everyone eats at the end of the show."

It's a sizzling twist to dinner theatre.
