WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) -- A group of local residents, including a retired firefighter, are heading to help victims in flood-drenched and tornado-ravaged parts of Florida and Georgia.

Areas from Orlando to Tampa, from Pensacola to Valdosta, have experienced severe weather over the past few weeks, including swollen rivers and tornadoes.

The four are volunteers and employees with local chapters of the American Red Cross. They will serve as case workers and food service coordinators, said spokeswoman Brittany Jo Miller.

West Palm Beach-based volunteer Georgie Skover was packing up and preparing for a possible two-week deployment on Wednesday night.

"When people are left with nothing; when their house is flooded and they have to leave their house, and they have no place to go; and they have no belongings, no clothes, no food... they're just in a dire situation," Stover said.

"I always felt a real calling," she added.
