School District responds to arrest of Belle Glade reverend

By Chuck Weber email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-A Belle Glade minister is now behind bars in Palm Beach County. Initially found and arrested in Tampa, Harris is back in South Florida to face charges of luring high school football players to his home, video taping them, and engaging in sex acts with some.

Friday a spokesman for the Palm Beach County School District said his agency was not aware of any allegations of inappropriate activity between Harris and students. But spokesman Nat Harrington said the District had been closely watching Harris for years.

Harrington says some Glades Central High parents had actually designated Harris as a guardian for their kids. But while Harris had a legitimate reason to visit the campus, spokesman Harrington said Harris also seemed determined to visit places he had no reason to be. That prompted extra scrutiny by District employees.

"To watch one individual, or to follow an individual, or escort an individual off campus, that's not the norm in my experience," said Harrington. "We didn't have that with any other person to this level."

In 2003 School District Police arrested Harris for trespassing, after officers say he sped past them at the Glades Central entrance. The District also says it rejected Harris' applications to be a volunteer at Glades Central, due to his lengthy arrest record dating back to the 1960's.
