Another teacher faces sex charges; changes needed?

By Chuck Weber email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-A teacher facing sex charges. We've seen it before.

Just in the past three years, at least four local teachers started serving prison time after pleading guilty to having sex with a student. Their sentences-- from 5 to 10 years. And there are other cases, still unresolved.

Should we be doing something different? Palm Beach County School District spokesman Nat Harrington points out teachers go through training and licensing, yet still transgress.

"They have to sign off on the fact that they understand their training," said Harrington. "Before they get a license to teach, they sign off on a code of conduct and code of professional ethics." He says they know what the expectations are.

"Maybe we need to look at it in a different light," suggests Nancy McBride of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children office in North Palm Beach. "How it's being disseminated to the teachers, how the students are getting the information. What are we exactly telling them?"

McBride says she's convinced we, as a society, need to do a better job of talking to our kids, at all ages, even as they progress through their teens. She says we need to let them know: a sexual situation with a teacher or any adult, is never right. They are always the victim. And they need to let someone know.
