COPY-Specter switch raises stakes for Franken-Coleman

Associated Press - April 28, 2009 1:23 PM ET

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter's planned switch from Republican to Democrat raises the stakes in Minnesota's U.S. Senate race.

Democrats would have a filibuster-proof 60 votes in the Senate if Specter switches parties and Democrat Al Franken wins in Minnesota. Franken holds a 312-vote lead over Republican Norm Coleman, who is asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to overturn his recount loss.

Oral arguments are scheduled for June 1. Specter's switch would raise pressure on whoever loses to continue the fight in federal court.

Coleman says thousands of absentee ballots were improperly rejected.

Spokesman Cullen Sheehan says Coleman's focus "remains on the thousands of Minnesota citizens who have not had their voices heard or their votes counted."
