Preschool Precautions

At Peter Pan Preschool in Palm Beach Gardens, with the concerns about swine flu, also known as H1N1 , hand washing is almost as much a part of the day as learning the A-B-C's.

To make hand washing less of a chore, they've even got a song they sing while they do it.

Because of swine flu, the preschool has the kids in the habit now of washing their hands every half-hour.

"We want to be smart about this and take all the necessary precautions," said Kimberly Hill, Peter Pan Preschool director.

This pre-school on Ruby Street has been open more than 30 years. Hill says they've never had an outbreak of a serious illness in all that time.

With the threat of swine flu now a growing worry, the Peter Pan preschool has also put hand sanitizers at the front counter for parents to use when picking up or dropping off kids.  Plus they've started washing all the door handles and doorknobs with a mixture of bleach-water. Same goes for the toilet seats.  And they put a sign at the front entrance which reads: "Please conduct daily health checks of your child prior to drop off. No fever, cough, runny nose, diarrhea or signs of illness. Thank you."

Shauna Stapleton's 5 year old son Christian attends the preschool.  She says swine flu is definitely not something she's willing to ignore.

"The fact that it's in the United States and I had heard there was an infant death in Texas or something. It's getting scarier,"  Stapleton said.
