One Dead in Apartment Fire

Flames swept through a North Palm beach apartment a little after one this afternoon.  One man is dead,  and at least two others are having to find another place to stay. Sheriff's investigators tell us it appears this was a suicide.  A 27 year old man died after setting his own apartment on fire.

The victim's body was found in a back bedroom. The fire gutted his apartment and the damage was confined to that one apartment. There are a total of four apartments in the building that caught fire at the corner of Dolphin Lane and  Ellison Wilson Road.

Fire officials say three other people were in the single-story apartment building when the fire began, and all  three got out safely.

We spoke to one guy, a community college student, who was home at the time watching TV when he realized the unit next door was in flames.

"I ran outside. My neighbor was all frantic and there was flames coming out of the side of the building. It wasn't too big of a fire.  I just got to the side, everyone told me to get out of the way. That's what I did, I just grabbed my surfboard and my dog and left," said neighbor Kory Dahl.

"I think it's horribly tragic.  I can't believe it.  I'm just glad that everybody, me,  my son and my other neighbors are all okay, said Kathy Dahl, Kory's mother.  She was not there when the fire took place and rushed home when she got a call that the building was on fire.   A Palm Beach County Sheriff's detective  says the victim who set his apartment on fire had no history of mental illness. He was scheduled to move out today, and it's not clear what led him to set the place on fire.

There are two people, Kory and Kathy Dahl,  who may not be able to return to their apartment tonight due to smoke damage. They may have to find another place to stay, at least for a day or two, while their unit is being cleaned.
