EPA investigating 'spot-on' treatments

(WFLX) - There are many different brands out there, but, basically the EPA is investigating all of the spot-on treatments. The ones that you open and apply to the back of a cat or dog's neck.

For some animals, this has caused all kinds of reactions from skin rashes to even seizures and deaths.

Experts say you should think carefully before giving your pet any flea and tick medication especially now since the environmental protection agency is investigating many of these products after a recent increase in the number of people reporting problems with them.

"I've seen problems with dogs developing seizures lethargy, vomiting diarrhea," said veterinarian Dr. Jean Burns. She's treated dogs and cats sick from using many over the counter products, like Hartz and others.

She only sells Frontline in her office, because, she says, it has the fewest side effects. "Occasionally, you get redness at the sight, irritation. [I've] never seen them to cause an illness, but seen it in many over the counter."

But the EPA is apparently investigating all "spot-on" product even Frontline which is only sold by vets.

Dr. Burns is confident, though, that it's the over the counter products that are harmful because they have totally different chemicals in them.

She says more people are using them now because they are cheaper.

Dog owners say not using flea control is not an option. "I wasn't aware of the problem, but I trust the vet to tell me not to use something."

For now, none of these products are being recalled, but, experts say, be careful.

The EPA is urging pet owners to take precautions by only using these products as directed and not in excess. They also say to watch your pets carefully after applying the product to see if any reaction occurs.
