KFC Not Taking Coupons

A coupon offer at Kentucky Fried Chicken goes wrong and has some customers upset.

They thought they could present their coupon for a free grilled chicken meal,  a $4.00 value.

But they're being turned away. And it's happening at KFC's all over the country.

We visited a Kentucky Fried Chicken fast-food restaurant in Riviera Beach on Blue Heron Boulevard. Customers were coming in at a steady pace all afternoon, hoping to redeem their coupons.

They're all "hungry" for a deal, and some are leaving a little frustrated.

Imagine, getting a free two-piece grilled chicken meal!   In this economy, it sounds pretty good to some KFC customers.

But when they showed up with coupons they downloaded from the Internet,  they were turned away.

"I was kinda disappointed 'cause I'm hungry and I wanted to eat now, so that's all I can do. Do you think it's fair that they're turning you away without taking that coupon?  I don't think it was fair. It's unfair," said Frances Cleveland, a KFC customer we spoke with in the parking lot as she left.

Customers at this KFC in Riviera Beach were met by a poster taped to the front door, telling them the coupon would not be accepted.

The free Kentucky Fried Chicken two-piece grilled chicken meal was nationwide this week, with millions of coupons downloaded from the web. Two pieces of chicken, two sides and a biscuit.

But some restaurants around the country were so overwhelmed by folks trying to redeem the coupons they ran out of chicken. Causing KFC to stop honoring the coupons, at least for now.

"I think that's a bunch of bull-crap if you ask me. Why? Cause I was lookin' forward to it.," said KFC customer Jerome Colts of Boynton Beach.

"I think it's terrible 'cause they don't have very many KFC's in the area and I had to travel from West Palm Beach to this one, and to waste gas and not get anything is just unbelievable," said Olga Gidion, another KFC customer.

Aware that many customers had no appetite for being turned away without a free meal,  KFC is trying to smooth things over with this message posted on its web site.

"Please bring your coupon to a KFC restaurant or visit KFC-dot-com and in exchange we'll send you a raincheck for another time.  We're really sorry for the inconvenience and we thank you for your understanding," said Roger Eaton, KFC president.

Customers who were turned away were given a slip that they are supposed to fill out, and mail along with their coupon to KFC in Louisville, Kentucky and they'll get a rain-check in the mail.

That may soothe some hard feelings, but some customers told me they wanted food, not the runaround.
