Super Predator Unit Opens

Boca Raton, FL (WFLX)

It's a big day for prosecutors in Palm Beach County.

They've just started what they call "the super predator unit."

They say it will give them the upper hand when it comes to catching people in our area who are creating child pornography.

Authorities say there are thousands,  that's right,  thousands of people right here in Palm Beach County who are possessing large amounts of child pornography.

They want to go after these people, and the ones who are actually filming the kiddie porn and putting it on the web.

Painters, carpenters,  locksmiths are  putting the finishing touches on the "super predator unit," which is in an office complex near I-95 in Boca Raton.

The state attorney and law enforcement say it will allow them to go after creeps and sex predators preying on kids like never before.   They say the culprits are creating the videos here, and then sending them around the world on the Internet.

"I've been convinced that it's a huge problem," said Michael McAuliffe, Palm Beach County State Attorney.

A private firm in Boca Raton, TLO, is offering its computers and technical expertise to police at no charge and even providing police with office space.

"With high-speed technology we're able to do in minutes or seconds a lot of data identification analysis to identify the worst of the worst offenders," said Stephen Racioppo, TLO chief operating officer.  Boynton Beach Police , Boca Raton Police, and  the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office are all assigning officers to the super predator unit.

A full-time prosecutor will also be part of the unit.  Assistant state attorney Greg Schiller is going to devote his full attention to finding and prosecuting  the people in our area who are creating and filming child porn.

Until now, to catch the people making and distributing kiddie porn, police had to rely on their own computer skills and whatever equipment and expertise they had.

"Now we have some investigative tools that may bring us closer to our goal of eliminating these predators from our community," McAuliffe said.    This marks the first time  the state attorney's office has  had a full-time prosecutor dealing only with child pornography.

But they say the crime is growing so much, they feel it's an important step.

TLO is allowing police from all over the country to come to Boca Raton and work out of their facility.

They say police from as far away as Wyoming will be there.
