PORT ST LUICE (WFLX) - The boy was found crying, clutching to a warm soda bottle.

A Port St. Lucie father is facing charges for leaving his 3-year-old son alone in a hot car.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of Sam's Club on South US 1 in Port St. Lucie.

The arrest report says witnesses called police after they found a child crying inside a car with the windows slightly rolled down. An off-duty deputy pulled into the parking lot when he saw two women trying to talk to the child from outside the locked car. At that point, the deputy went into the store to find the parents of the child, but had no success. When he could not find a guardian for the child, he called 911.

When police arrived, they arrested 24-year-old Reginald Johnson, the boy's father.

Police say Johnson left his 3-year-old son in the car and went inside the store to use the restroom and find his wife who was shopping. Johnson claimed that his son was sleeping, so he cracked the windows and left him sleeping.

Officers charged Johnson with child neglect.

Witnesses say, they believe, the child was in the car between 15 and 20 minutes.

The boy was sweating, warm to the touch and holding a warm soda bottle.

The child was released to his mother.
