PORT ST LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - The good news is your deposits are safe, and BankUnited, though shut down by federal regulators, will be back open for business Friday as if nothing happened.

BankUnited FSB, a savings bank based in Coral Gables, was the 34th federally insured institution to be closed this year. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of the bank on Thursday.

With 10 branches on the Treasure Coast, we stopped by the Fort Pierce and two Port St. Lucie branches, all on US 1, to find no sign or notice to reassure concerned customers. BankUnited has 16 branches in Palm Beach County, as well.

The finances behind the bank not going well for the past year - reporting $13 billion in troubled assets.

The FDIC seized the bank Thursday, shutting it down for not having enough cash, and then selling it to private investors who bid the highest.

The customers do not have to worry. Your deposits are safe. Shareholders will be the losers when it comes to equity.

A private investment group bought BankUnited, and will reopen all the branches Friday under the same name with a new charter.

Customers can continue to use BankUnited checks, ATM cards and debit cards.

Loan customers, you are not off the hook. You still have to make payments as usual.

If you have question about the shut down, call the FDIC at 1 (800) 451-1093.
