Large Memorial Day crowd at veterans cemetery

WEST OF LANTANA, FL (WFLX)-Organizers estimate around 2,000 people turned out Monday in the heat at South Florida National Cemetery west of Lantana. It was the new veterans cemetery's second Memorial Day observance.

Bagpipes played, small vintage planes flew overhead, and a gun volley crackled through the air-- all honoring those who fought for their country, and the many who made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

"I lost men and I will always honor them, no matter what," said Korean War veteran Joe Green, explaining his presence at the event. "A lot of us came home with frost bite, a lot of us came home with mental anguish, but the people that didn't come back, we want their families to know that we remember."

One of the speakers, Marine Captain Ben Lubin, who's served in Afghanistan and Iraq, told the crowd two of his comrades lost their lives. "I've had the privilege to serve with the greatest people I've ever known," he said of the men.

"Down to the last one of us, we'll do it all over again," remarked Green after the ceremony. "This is our country. We love it."
