Go-Kart Crash Injures Boy

Jupiter, FL (WFLX)

A young boy is in critical condition tonight after suffering severe burns in a go-kart crash.

It happened at the Palm Beach International Raceway off the Beeline Highway near Jupiter.

This mishap happened about 2:30 this afternoon.

The victim of the go-kart crash was taken byTraumahawk to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

Authorities say the victim is a 7 to 9 year old boy, who suffered second-degree burns over about 50-percent of his body.   Late this afternoon, the kart that caught fire,  a blue go-kart that resembles a Corvette,  was hauled away on the back of a flat-bed truck.

We don't have details on how the go-kart crash happened, or what caused it.

But an eyewitness told us he was driving in his van along the perimeter of the go-kart track, outside the fence that surrounds the track, when he saw the child flip the go-kart and it burst into flames.

"I saw the go-kart caught on fire, and I jumped the fence and I flipped the kart back over and took off the seat belt. Luckily for us, we saved him. In 30 more seconds if we didn't run to him, he would've died," said Higinio Robles of Homestead, one of  several people who ran over to help.

Robles told us the boy had burns on his hands, chest and neck.

He says the child was wearing a helmet, and a special protective racing suit. But he says it did not appear to be a fire-proof suit.  He says he and three or four other guys ran over to help and took off their shirts to smother the flames and wait for an ambulance to get there.

He says the boy kept asking for his dad, and was conscious the whole time.  The boy is in critical condition at St. Mary's.   A spokesman with Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue told me he did not know if the child's injuries are life-threatening.

The president of the Raceway, Ron Dixon, said by phone he could not comment on the incident.
