The boy who was hurt in a go-kart crash yesterday at the Palm Beach International Raceway has been transferred to a burn unit in Miami.

Devin Olmstead of Pompano Beach,  who turns 9 years old today, is hospitalized at Jackson Memorial in critical but stable condition.

A sheriff's spokeswoman says Olmstead  underwent surgery this afternoon.

The boy had extensive second degree burns over about 50-percent of his body when his go-kart flipped and caught on fire.

"Safety is paramount at Palm Beach International Raceway and we take great strides to ensure everyone's safety and rapid access to emergency services in the event of an incident," said Howard Wishner, chief communications/marketing officer at Palm Beach International Raceway.   Wishner says the cause of the crash has not been determined.  Eyewitnesses told us Monday the boy appeared to give it too much gas going into a turn, causing the go-kart to flip.

Several bystanders climbed a fence and ran onto the track  to help the injured boy yesterday, and they used their T-shirts to smother the flames on the child's body.
