WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A lifeline for unemployed Floridians, who have run out of benefits, will now get a boost.
Thanks to new legislation signed by Governor Crist, unemployment benefits are going up.
Jobless Floridians whose unemployment benefits are due to end soon will have those payments extended.
As many as 250,000 out-of-work Floridians will get extra unemployment benefits under legislation signed into law by Governor Charlie Crist.
The cash will come from more than $400 million in federal stimulus aid.
The additional money will cover workers whose unemployment benefits, now capped at a total of 59 weeks, were about to expire or would expire in the next few months.
The extended benefits will begin in July.
To be eligible, a person must be totally or partly unemployed and have exhausted all other unemployment benefits. They must also actively seek work and be willing to accept a job that is suitable to their work abilities.
