BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Boynton Beach Police are investigating the drowning death of a 1-and-a half-year-old boy in a pond at the Clipper Cove apartments on Thursday afternoon.
Update: FRI 9:30 AM: Shawn Termilus was found on his side in about three to four feet of water by his 12-year-old cousin. When the boy's cousin went looking for him, he found the young toddler and pulled him out of the pond.
Off-duty Boynton Beach Police Officer Charles Turco, who was in the area, performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
Shawn Termilus was taken by a police escort to Bethesda Memorial Hospital where he later died.
The toddler's mother, Marie Termilus, was at work at the time of the drowning. Rose Durand, 32, was left in charge of Shawn Termilus, his 12-year-old cousin and three other children.
Police have not yet been able to interview Durand because she fell ill upon hearing that the toddler drowned, and she had to be taken to the hospital.
At this point, detectives have been able to determine that the children went to play in a nearby playground. When the 12-year-old cousin couldn't find Shawn Termilus, he walked back toward the apartment to see if he was there. That's when he found him in the pond.
Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
