Downtown condo confronts Chinese drywall potential

By Chuck Weber email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-More local people face potential Chinese drywall troubles. The latest case is at the Whitney condo in downtown West Palm Beach.

Residents there got a letter informing them of the "likely presence of Chinese drywall," which came to light during an investigation of "a failed air conditioning unit." The letter also points out, "not all drywall manufactured in China... has been found to be defective."

"We were scared naturally," says Jim Telliard, an owner at the Whitney, recalling his initial reaction to the letter. But Telliard says he and his wife, Ella, haven't seen any problems at their place.

"I checked our air conditioning and found it clean as a whistle," says Telliard. "No problem at all. And we've had no odors."

"None of us have symptoms that you've read about," chimes in Ella.

No respiratory problems or headaches. No corroded copper pipes as have appeared at homes in West Boynton for example.

Miki Carey, a renter, just moved into the Whitney a couple weeks ago. "We were kind of surprised," says Carey. "If it has to with us, hopefully they take care of it. It's kind of scary, kind of weird at the same time."

A meeting is set for Whitney residents to discuss the drywall issue. The building manager said he could not comment and referred us to board members.
