Fatal crash second this week involving paving crews

By Chuck Weber email

JUPITER, FL (WFLX)-Two men working an overnight paving project in Jupiter were hit by a car and killed. A third worker was injured.

It happened just after midnight on Alternate A-1-A, south of Toney Penna Road. Jupiter Police say in spite of cones and a flashing sign, a car hit the men, then kept going, rear ending another car.

Dead at the scene were Jesus Resendiz of Palm Beach County, and Steven Dunn of Georgia. Mike Slade, of the paving firm, Ranger Construction, identified Dunn as an well-known expert in the paving field. He was working for Ranger as a consultant.  Police say the third worker, Clint Talley, is in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police identified the driver of the car as 43-year old Cynthia Castoro of Tequesta. Right now she's not charged, but officers did take a blood sample-- mandatory in cases like this.

"Traffic reconstructionists were out here this morning," said Officer Sally Collins-Ortiz of Jupiter Police. "They're going to be waiting for results of the blood draw."

An executive with another paving company says it was eerie seeing reports of the Jupiter crash, because it was exactly a week ago a member of another overnight paving crew was hit in Palm Springs. In that case, police say the driver of a pick-up truck hit paving worker Ernest Howell, again even with cones in place and a huge sign flashing. Investigators say the driver never applied the brakes. Howell will survive, but is still in the hospital recovering.

"People should be decreasing their speeds" and taking greater care, emphasized Officer Collins-Ortiz. "In the construction zones you need to dramatically decrease your speed," she said.
