Tri-Rail commuter trains maintained-- for now

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-Tri-Rail service will stay the same at least for another year. Friday the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, meeting in Pompano Beach, approved an amended budget keeping the current level of service for the commuter rail line, including weekend trains.

Again this year, the state legislature failed to approve a permanent funding source for Tri-Rail, and contributions from Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties was expected to be reduced. So the Transportation Authority had proposed reducing weekday trains from 50 to 30, and eliminating weekend service completely.

But Friday the Authority board okayed diverting money set aside for parking and station improvements, to keeping the current schedule in tact.

Tri-Rail spokeswoman Bonnie Arnold emphasized, "It's only a stop-gap measure." She says the commuter line has to obtain a funding source or face extinction. The transportation board made finding funding its priority.
