New rules to prevent contamination of Florida honey

Posted by Tricia Dunn

(WFLX) - The new rule bans additives and chemicals in honey produced, processed, or sold in Florida.

Agriculture officials say too often in the past, honey has been cut with water or sugar. In some cases, it's also been found to be contaminated with insecticides or antibiotics.

Honey producers tell us they were concerned about the health of consumers. "We'll be sending our food people out there to check on samples of honey from time to time as we get complaints."

Companies that sell honey that is not pure and not labeled will be given a warning, repeat offenders will face up to a 500-dollar fine per violation.
