New ban to protect Florida turtles

(WFLX) - A ban on commercial harvesting of Florida's freshwater turtles is set to go into effect next week.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted last month to approve the measures to protect more than two dozen species.

The new rule only allows a person to take one turtle a day from the wild for most species. Many hunters have turned to Florida to get their supply, especially to ship to Asian markets, where turtle meat is a delicacy.

The new ban also prohibits the collection of turtle eggs.
