Nude Beach to boost tourism

KEY WEST, FL (WFLX) - The city of Key West may soon allow beach goers to swim in their birthday suits. Commissioners are considering the proposal of a nude beach to help boost tourism.

Key West is a popular destination for a lot of South Florida residents who are looking for a short and easy vacation, but if nudist groups have it their way, there will be one more attraction on the Island besides great snorkeling and Duval Street.

Several groups, including the South Florida Free Beaches and Florida Naturist Association, are pushing a proposal to make the eastern end of Smathers Beach on Key West clothing-optional.  They say the clothing-optional beach will be family-friendly for those who enjoy living the nudist lifestyle and it has a possibility of generating more than 900-million dollars every year in new tourist revenue.

The Key West City Commissioners will look at the proposal on Tuesday, if it is passed, a referendum will be placed on the city's October sixth ballot to let voters make the final decision.
