WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - JFK Medical Center in West Palm Beach takes social networking to another level. Twitter is becoming a hot tool inside the operating room.

Now, one surgeon offers updates as she works. "Yesterday [Thursday] was the very first time we did it, and we already doubled the number of people following me on Twitter," said oncology specialist Dr. Beth-Ann Lesnikoski.

It's just another way to get patients and their family more health information. Dr. Lesnikoski is the first doctor in Palm Beach County to use Twitter to keep a patients' relatives up to date about what is going on inside the operatring room. She does so by creating a public Twitter account that a patient's family members can follow, but no personal information is ever posted. "Much of what we do is very generic."

But Dr. Lesnikoski doesn't do any of the Twittering herself. For now, public relations specialist Nicole Baxter handles all the Tweets.

In between updates, she sends out facts about breast cancer. "It's a simple task for her to type in a message about a patient than for her to call the family in the waiting area."

Relatives like the idea of being kept in the loop when it comes to a loved ones surgery.
