Wild hogs decimate neighbors yards

By Chuck Weber email

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX)-It's not your average neighborhood nuisance. At the Savanna Club in Port St. Lucie, wild hogs are tearing up lawns and driving neighbors crazy.

It looks like someone took a giant rotor-tiller to Fred and Pat Ludwig's back yard. "I said, 'Pat, Pat, something happened back here,'" recalled Mr. Ludwig. "And we came out and we all the grass is torn up like crazy."

That was a week and a half ago. The pigs have been back several times.

"I was up several nights banging pots and pans, and banging against the house," said Mrs. Ludwig. "They would go, but they would come back."

The wild hogs, here in South Florida since the Spaniards arrived, are coming from nearby natural areas. They tear up the ground looking for bugs and grubs-- their food.

The homeowners association has hired a trapper. So far he's captured three pigs, including two in a trap erected in the Ludwigs' back yard. Unfortunately there are many more.

"One night I woke up and put the light on in the back," said Mrs. Ludwig. "I was counting them and there were 16. It was like a herd of them."

The Savanna Club development is next to Savannas Preserve State Park. At the park's education center, Tessa Sheridan said the park is also trying to control the wild hogs, which cause incredible damage in natural areas too.

The Ludwigs and three other neighbors now have the costly task of re-sodding their lawns. While homeowners at Savanna Club are responsible for maintaining their yards, at least some feel the company that owns the property should help in a case like this.

Sunday employees of American Land Lease Company referred us to their main office in Clearwater, but it was closed.
