It pays to be smoke-free

(WFLX) - If Orange County's nine thousand employees want to smoke, they'll see up to twenty five bucks a pay check go up in smoke.

County Commissioners are voting in favor of a surcharge on Health Insurance premiums for smokers, they say the money would help offset medical insurance increases.

According to the Commissioners, "It is something that we do think, number one is going to help mitigate the cost of tobacco use and we really hope its something that employees will understand and really take this opportunity to change that behavior."

Employees were warned about a year ago. Next month, they'll have to sign an affidavit, that they will remain smoke-free otherwise, the payments will start coming out of their paychecks in January.
