School Protest

By Summer Knowles

Wellington, FL (WFLX) The Palm Beach County School District's big back to school meeting for its transportation workers ended up being a big disappointment for the workers' union. After training presentations were given, the Service Employees International Union was scheduled to speak on behalf of its members to voice concerns about what they are calling union contract violations. They say those violations include things like making employees purchase uniforms, refusing to allow senior bus drivers to bid on routes of their choice and outsourcing mechanics' work without consulting the union. When asked why the meeting was dismissed before the union representatives were able to speak, Palm Beach County School District Transportation officials said it was all a big misunderstanding. Many union members believe it was an intentional move to silence the union, but say they plan to keep pressing for answers.
