That's Life: High Cholesterol

These are some of the medications we use to treat high cholesterol, high LDL/low HDL levels because they cause heart disease. Most of them are from the statin group of medications, such as Pravachol, Lescol, Zocor, Altocor, Lipitor and now a new one: Welchol.

But there's something else that just came out - it's something new and something old. A new medication was just released, it's called Zetia. It prevents absorption of cholesterol from the foods that you eat, so it's used as an adjunct to those medications and it's been shown to work by about 20%. In other words, if you use those medications and your cholesterol's still not within the normal limits, this medication will decrease it by another 20%.

That's the new medication, but it reflects an old one. Its in Lipobalance and it's called Goggol. Goggol is an Ayurvedic medication that's been used for about 600 years. It comes from a tree gum called Goggol and it does the same thing. If you take this medication it stops absorption of the cholesterol. So here you have something new and something old.

Are they the same? If you're confused, this is what I'd recommend. If you have a cholesterol problem take these medications first, under your doctor's direction, of course. If there's still a problem you can add these. I would recommend the old one - the one that's been around for 600 years. I think it's safer and cheaper. What we need is a head to head study between them.

I'm Dr David Vastola and That's Life.
