Shy Bladder Syndrome

Patrick loves sports, but the problem is he has Paruresis - do you have it? It can be a real problem especially if you're going to a sporting event. It affects 17 million people here in the United States. Let me tell you about it.

Paruresis goes by another name, it's called the Shy Bladder Syndrome. What happens is that people under stress can't go. It can affect men & women equally. About 9 out of 10 men will report it but no women will report it because they're that self conscious about it.

Now what happened to Patrick is he went to a hockey games once, and if you've been to hockey you know you have to be there because you can miss a lot of goals over a short period of time. And while waiting in line and then having to get back in line because he couldn't go - he missed three goals. That's called Bashful Bladder Syndrome, or Paruresis.

It's a medical condition, there's not much you can do about it because the harder you try, the worse it gets. There are ways of treating it - not with medication, but with cognitive behavior modification techniques, and it works.

So if you have shy bladder syndrome, or Paruresis, make sure you get it taken care of - otherwise you're going to have to get back in line.

I'm Dr David Vastola and that's life.
