Palm Beachers recall Ted Kennedy

PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-In Palm Beach, where Sen. Ted Kennedy and his family were part of life for many years, people recalled the senator's life and reacted to his death.

The Kennedy's maintained an oceanfront estate on Palm Beach's north end. When in town, the family worshipped down the street at St. Edwards Catholic Church, and often spent time at Green's Pharmacy and lunch counter.

"We get a lot of tourists that come in just because the Kennedy's ate here," said Debbie Knowles, a waitress at Green's. "It's a sad day."

Long time Palm Beach resident Jane Mallan says she got to meet Sen. Kennedy, during his visits to town. Mallan described Kennedy as "pleasant, very well-educated, well spoken, charming."

Mallan said she felt Kennedy did a good job in the Senate. "Tried to help us all," she said. "Very sad for everyone, especially his family."

Harry McQuire, a Palm Beacher for ten years, readily admitted to being at odds with Kennedy on political issues. Still McQuire called the senator's death a loss. "I disagree with him politically, but he did a lot," said McQuire. "He was a force. If you just look at all the bills that he sponsored."

"It was the passing of someone, who has devoted his life to service of the country," assessed Ellen Bitton, who lived near Kennedy family members in New York. "You may agree with him, or disagree with him, but he really was one of our beacons."
