Tropical Storm Danny bringing strong rip currents

TALLAHASSEE, FL(WFLX) - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is urging people to be careful in and around the water over the next two days in advance of Tropical Storm Danny.

Although Danny is not expected to make landfall in Florida, emergency management officials have warned of a high risk for rip currents and ocean swells to impact the east coast over the next two days.

DEP offers the following five tips for rip-current safety:

  • Always use the "buddy-system" and know your ability as a swimmer.
  • If caught in a rip current, remain calm rather than fighting the rip current. Most trouble spots are less than 30 feet wide.
  • When free from the rip current, swim parallel to the shore, and then swim in to safe waters.
  • Obey all local rules and observe any posted warnings.
  • If red flag warnings are posted, play it safe and stay out of the water.
