OKEECHOBEE, FL (WFLX) - An Okeechobee family is in mourning after a loved one is killed by a man who, police say, was drunk and doesn't belong in the country.
At 6 p.m. Saturday on Highway 441, Florida Highway Patrol Troopers say Isaias Mejia-Hernandez was drunk and slammed head-on into Gayle Turner. Turner was driving with her granddaughter, Rayla, and a friend.
Gayle Turner's partner, Randy Humm, says, "I don't have my girl of 18 years."
Troopers say Hernandez's blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit, and he's in the country illegally. He has no drivers license, no Social Security card, and lives and works at a dairy farm.
"We need to watch who is in our country," stated Humm. "He shouldn't have been here. He had no driver's license; he was drunk."
Humm says that driver took away his best friend. The couple had big plans for their lives. They loved little 8-year-old Rayla who was in the backseat during the accident.
Family friend, Kimberly Mumford, who was riding in the front seat remains hospitalized.
Randy is now preparing for Gayle's funeral, pulling himself together for their little granddaughter. "She was our life, and I am going to continue that."
Hernandez was taken to Lawnwood Medical Center for treatment. Troopers say he tried to break out several times, but finally was arrested for DUI manslaughter and a host of other charges.
