Driver charged with killing road workers; Victim's wife speaks

By Chuck Weber email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-A woman went before a judge Friday, accused of driving drunk and killing two road construction workers, injuring a third, and hitting a car.

Cynthia Castoro, of Tequesta, is charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury. The counts stem from a middle-of-the-night crash June 26, on Alternate A-1-A in Jupiter. The workers who were killed and injured were part of a road paving crew.

The arrest report says Castoro's Blood Alcohol Level was 0.235, nearly three times the legal limit. The report says Castoro admitted to drinking wine. "Surely I had two glasses," she's quoted saying. Police say Castoro also acknowledged hitting the car. But when asked, "did you hit... barricades or anything else," the report says, "she replied 'No, no.'"

By agreement with prosecutors, Castoro's bail was set at $40,000, and she cannot drink or drive. After Friday's hearing, her lawyer David Roth said, "I can tell you Miss Castoro is extremely remorseful about the loss of life and the serious injury that resulted from this tragic accident."

"I want people to understand what they're doing before they even touch that glass," said Linda Piedra, widow of one of the men killed, 34-year old Jesus Resendiz. She spoke with us later in the day, her lawyer by her side.

"It's hard because I don't have time for my kids like I used to," said Piedra. The couple have four children-- ages 5 to 10.

"I just want her to realize her errors, what she did, it hurts," said Piedra.
