Military mix up: Family accidentally told son was dead

Posted by Rachel Leigh - email

(WFLX) - A painful mistake: The military accidentally tells one family their loved one was killed overseas.

"She was screaming at me, 'he's alive; he's alive,'" said Ray Jasper, the soldier's father. "'Jesse is not dead!' How do you know?' She said, "'I just talked to him; he is not dead.'"

The family was told their son was killed in action in Afghanistan. They say they spent four hours mourning his death before his girlfriend received a phone call from him. The family says they don't understand how the military could make such a major mistake.

"How does the military, who should have so much intelligence and so much information, not know the difference?"

The Army says it is investigating what happened.
