That's Life: Pilates

Patrick & I are at Gold's Gym because we're going to exercise. We are going to do aerobics with weightlifting, the combination which is important - 3 hours weekly. But there's something else coming into focus, it has to do with an old concept. Its called pilates. Let me show you what it's all about and how it can help you. Follow us.

Hi Bernie. Let me introduce you to a certified instructor of pilates. This is Bernie Nelson. Bernie can you tell us something about it?

Bernie Nelson/Pilates Instructor: "Pilates is a very functional training it basically comes from the core. We work a lot of core development encouraging people to re-educate thier muscles so that they have proper motion so there's less pressure on their spine, or creating injuries.

This is what we call arm circle - this is a basic exercise that we would usually start with the normal person. We use this to start working on the core strentgth.

This exercise really works on the articulation of the spine and the flexibility of all the limbs. Still working on the stability and the lengthening and the actual stability of the spine through the motion, so we really work on curving the back and keeping it steady as she stretches forward.

A lot of pilates movement take a lot of strength. We require a lot of core stability but we also still work a lot on the power movement which really keep the body in shape."

So that's it and you see we have something new, something old. It takes a lot of equipment, a lot of specialty care - someone who knows how to do it but i think it's important. Why strengthen the extremities, but not the core, because the core's the main frame. So if you do that you're going to have a shape like this.
