ST LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - It's been one year since the rules about where sex offenders can live changed in St. Lucie County. Tuesday night, St. Lucie County deputies and Port St. Lucie Police officers made sure everyone was obeying the new rules.

St. Lucie County Detective Sue Woodward briefed law enforcement Tuesday afternoon. Their mission: Check on the more than 400 sex offenders and predators living in St. Lucie County.

For years, St. Lucie County was the place to move for those criminals. Now, they can't live within 2,500 feet of a park, daycare or school. Det. Woodward stated, "It has probably made the community feel differently; I don't think our jobs are any easier."

Deputies and officers spent the night knocking on doors making sure sex offenders and predators have a permanent, appropriate home. Officer Shane Freeman said, "We make sure they are not out around schools, and we protect our residents."

While some obey the law, deputies say, a select few don't. One man was arrested Tuesday after he told deputies he had been "staying with friends" in homes near children, schools, parks and never giving the state an address as required. He's been out on bond for the same violation for 12 days but has since been re-arrested.

Deputies and Officers make these checks about four times a year.
