BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A car crashes into a pond spurring a dramatic rescue attempt. It happened Tuesday night just west of Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach off of Miner Road. For some unknown reason, the driver of the car ended up in a lake.
Jeff Toeniskoetter had a frightening Tuesday evening. "I looked out the back window and saw wheels of a car."
Those wheels from a small BMW floating in his backyard lake. "I grabbed my cell phone and just ran. I jumped the fence ran around the lake."
Then, he and some neighbors jumped into the murky water, searched for victims, flipped the car over, but it was too late. "I felt in the driver's side, felt whoever was in the car, and then by that time the car slipped on us."
Witnesses say they saw the driver of the BMW on the road; then, seemingly drive off the road. There are few skid marks -- just a trampled mess of bushes.
Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Steve Lewis says, "They definitely drove off the road, but how that happened remains to be seen."
Fire Rescue divers eventually pulled the driver out and rushed him to the hospital, but the victim didn't make it. Neighbors say this road is a little dangerous.
They say drivers rush up and down Miner Road. Neighbor Kim Duffy says, "It's a two lane road people speed up and down it. They are always passing each other."
Jeff cut his leg and hands during the dive, but, he says, that's nothing. He wished he could have saved the driver, but it just wasn't possible.
