West Palm BBB employee says she was scammed

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Often we hear about ordinary people being scammed, but it's not everyday it happens to somebody from the Better Business Bureau.

Lisa Butcher, a Better Business Bureau employee from West Palm Beach, says she was conned by a loan company.

She says Alterna Referrals Services in Chicago told her they would give her a $10,000 loan.

But due to her credit history, they said, she needed to buy some insurance from them to protect them if she had trouble repaying the loan.

So she wired them $645 via Western Union. And, she says, they never gave her the loan, won't return her calls, and they've got her hard-earned money.

"I absolutely gave them every last dollar that I had. I'm four months pregnant now. By me sending them the money that I did, it leaves me in a situation where I didn't have money for food, and now rent's due. So, I'm in a very, very bad situation," Butcher said.

Alterna Referral Services did not return our calls seeking comment.

Lisa told us she checked out the company before sending money, and found they had no complaints on file with the BBB. They also were not a BBB member. Looking back on this, she feels, she probably could have researched them further.

A spokesman at the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida and the Caribbean says it just proves this can happen to anybody, and you need to be very careful.

If a loan company wants money up front before processing the loan, the BBB warns you should not deal with them and just hang up.
